Replica Window Keeps

Another relatively straightforward job.

Keeps for a locking system on timber windows.

Some were broken, some were missing - that was all that was wrong
with the operation of the window, everything else was fine.

So, just a case of undoing three screws, removing the old one,
fit the new one, job done.

Simple but effective.

A simple Job, sometimes they are!

Nothing special, this one!!

Simple job - "Can you copy this?"

I have no idea what it does or how it fits but it's copied!

Job done!

Window Stay Plunger - Captive Stay Box.

This is a job I did some time ago but couldn't
find the images!!

This is known as a Captive Stay Box, although
it is more often referred to as a Stay Plunger.

The original ones, after around 30 years of service,
were worn and damaged, so replacements were
made in brass and plated.

Window Winder Gearbox

Another challenge!

I call this type of winding system "Newman Gear".
It's just a generic name I use, as that was the first
type I came across.

There were many other companies that did this type
of thing and one of the component parts came to me
earlier on this year.

There were several on the site but one of these was missing.
This job was to create another one.

This was the result.

The completed item, ready to be fitted.

Thursday 22 May 2014

New lock case.

This was something a bit different!

Key was lost, an attempt was made to drill it and
therefore be able to open the door and when that
failed, out came the big hammer.
As you can see, it was a bit of a mess.

A new case was made, from solid aluminium, the
lock had new leaves and 3 keys supplied, the plate
was straitened and fettled and some new/old
handles were fitted, to keep the look of the period.

Primed, ready for installation and painting.

I even fitted Whitworth slotted screws, to keep it as
authentic as possible.

More stuff, next time.

Locking unit upgrade.

This was an interesting project.

These locking units were being used in a care facility and
windows they were on, were subject to some abuse.

The idea was, to remove the damaged moulding, which was
failing and replace it, with a purpose made aluminium part.
The locking nose - marked as Core, would be re-used.

The images at the bottom, show the completed item.

More panel guides.

These are the other panel guides, for Monarch sashes.

Again, as these were obsolete, these have been machined from
solid material.

VSS Panel Guides.

Another plastic machined part.

The original item is from a Monarch Vertical Sliding Sash,
and has now become obsolete.

"For want of a nail, the battle was lost" - as the saying goes!

As with anything that is made up from many components,
including windows, quite often a perfectly good sash, casement
or fanlight, is deemed as "unusable", for that want of a very
simple part.

These fit on the top of an aluminium sash, to stop the panel
crashing from side to side and enable it to run smoothly.
A simple part, doing a simple job - without it, the sash is very
difficult to use.

Thursday 30 January 2014

Tilt latch - fixed conversion.

This job was to provide "fixed" retainers, for a tilt and slide sash.

The tilt latches were being tampered with, allowing the sashes to tilt
inwards and in some cases, were not re-engaged properly.
This was considered a risk and it was decided to remove the original
latches and provide the items you see.

These were machined as a universal unit, being LH or RH, fixed with
pan head screws.

This means that the sashes can still be used as normal but will no longer
be able to tilt.
